Lead uses HTTP status codes to indicate the success or failure of an API request.
  • Codes in the 2xx range indicate success.
  • Codes in the 4xx range indicate a problem with the request. These are fixable using the information in the error response.
  • Codes in the 5xx range indicate a problem on Lead’s side. These are rare and are usually safe to retry.
Always use the HTTP status code on the response to determine the outcome of a request. The status field in the response body is a convenience copy and may be missing on some responses.

Most error responses use this shape, however all fields are optional:

We’re standardizing error responses across all Lead APIs as part of our V2 update. Changes to error formats will be announced before they take effect.
