# Core Balance Statuses

> A core balance shares its account's lifecycle; what an inactive balance means for account numbers; how to observe changes.

Lead manages every core balance status. You never call an endpoint to change one. A core balance shares its lifecycle with the core account it belongs to, and the two normally change together. [Core Account Statuses](/products/core-account/statuses) describes that lifecycle in full; this page covers what is specific to the balance.

## Lifecycle

    subgraph live [ ]
        direction TB
        active <--> inactive
    end
    active --> closed
    inactive --> closed
    style live fill:none,stroke:none
```
## Statuses
| **Status** | **Description** | **Notes** |
| - | - | - |
| `active` | The balance is operating normally. | Funds can move. Account numbers attached to the balance can transact. |
| `inactive` | Lead has paused the balance. Funds stay on the ledger. | Account numbers attached to the balance cannot send or receive while it is inactive. |
| `closed` | Lead has closed the balance on the core. Terminal. | The balance stays readable so historical core transactions still resolve. |
## What an inactive balance means for account numbers
Account numbers keep their own status, so an account number can show `active` and still not transact while its account is inactive. If payments fail unexpectedly, check the core account and core balance status first.
If the balance and its account disagree, treat the balance as authoritative for whether money can move, and contact your Technical Account Manager.
## Observing changes
Core balances do not emit events today, for status changes or for amount changes. Poll `GET /v2/core_balances/{id}` at the cadence your use case needs.
